2006 Jefferson Nickel
"Return to Monticello" |
In 2004 and 2005 the U.S. Mint
issued 2 new nickels for each year to commemorate Lewis and Clark's journey westward.
In 2006, the final nickel in the Westward Journey series, "Return to Monticello"
will be released.
When Thomas Jefferson was President of the
United States, he bought a piece of land from France called Louisiana, an area
much larger than the state of Louisiana today...so large, in fact, that buying
it made the United States twice as large as it had been before. Since Thomas
Jefferson is on the nickel, it's the perfect coin on which to celebrate the
Louisiana Purchase!
In 1804, President Jefferson sent a group led
by Lewis and Clark to explore the land, to describe the flora (plants) and fauna
(animals) they saw, and to find a way to the Pacific Ocean. Jefferson had
medals made for the expedition. The explorers were to give the medals as gifts
to the Native American chiefs they met as a sign of peace.
2004 Designs
While 2004 marks the first time in 66 years that the reverse of the U.S. nickel
has undergone a re-design, the standard obverse featuring the likeness of Thomas
Jefferson will remain in use for both Westward Journey nickels in 2004. In
2005, the obverse will be redesigned to include a new rendition of Jefferson,
along with the motto "Liberty."
The design on Jefferson's Peace Medal is the
design used on the first of the new nickels, the Peace Medal Nickel. It shows
the hand of a Native American and the hand of a European-American clasped in a
friendly handshake below a crossed pipe and tomahawk. The words "Louisiana
Purchase" are inscribed above the date of the purchase, 1803.
The second nickel of 2004 shows the
keelboat that was part of Lewis and Clark's expedition. Captains Meriwether
Lewis and William Clark are standing on deck at the start of their famous trip.
2005 Designs
2004 marked the first time in 66 years that the reverse of the U.S. nickel has
changed. In 2005, both the obverse and reverse of the nickel will be
changed. The obverse, originally designed by Felix Schlag, will feature a
new design by Joseph Fitzgerald. While still
containing a likeness of Jefferson, the new design will only show a portion of the bust
which will be offset to the left of the nickel.
The motto "Liberty" will be positioned slightly above the area previously used
reserved for the date in script. The date will be relocated to the 5
o'clock position around the rim of the nickel.
The first reverse issue of 2005, designed by
Jamie Franki, will contain a familiar sight -- the American bison, a take-off on
the much-loved buffalo nickel design.
The second reverse issue of 2005, designed by
Joseph Fitzgerald, will feature the ocean view enjoyed by Lewis and Clark on
their voyage.
2006 Design
The United States Mint has announced that the 1938 classic rendition of
President Thomas Jefferson’s Virginia home of Monticello by Felix Schlag will
return to the reverse of the Nation’s 2006 nickel. However, the design will be
crisper and more detailed than Americans have seen it in recent years, having
been carefully restored by United States Mint Sculptor-Engraver John Mercanti,
using Schlag’s original artwork. The obverse will feature a right-looking
Jefferson with Liberty in script.
